The Award

We are excited to announce that the inaugural Aluminium Federation Apprentice of the Year Award, celebrating excellence and innovation in the aluminium industry’s rising talents, will be held in conjunction with the ALFED Annual Dinner at the De Vere Beaumont Windsor on Thursday 28th November, 2024.

The ALFED Apprentice of the Year Award aims to honour exceptional apprentices who have demonstrated remarkable skill, dedication, and contribution to the aluminium manufacturing and processing industry.

This award not only celebrates individual accomplishments, but will also hopefully help to inspire and encourage the next generation of professionals in our field.

As the rate of change in our world accelerates and technology continues to shape our future, young people are poised to play a crucial role in driving innovation and progress. ALFED recognises the vital importance of supporting and empowering the next generation of professionals in the aluminium industry. With this in mind, we are launching the Apprentice of the Year Award to honour the remarkable contributions of young apprentices who are shaping the future of our industry.

The award ceremony promises to be a glamorous affair and will provide a platform to showcase and celebrate the exceptional talent and dedication of apprentices across the aluminium sector. From manufacturing to sales, apprenticeships offer a flexible pathway for bright, highly skilled individuals to embark on rewarding careers in our industry.

ALFED and the award sponsors are continually seeking to promote the industry as a career choice for those leaving school, and particularly the apprenticeship route as a training option.

Through the Apprentice Award, we seek to recognise and celebrate the brightest young apprentice talent from within the steel service centre sector and its supply chain.

Apprentices can be drawn from any subject or departmental area, including operations, engineering, commercial or office roles.

The award is open to any age or apprenticeship level.

A short list of 5 applicants will be selected for commendation and invited to celebrate their success at the prestigious ALFED Annual Dinner on Thursday 28th November, 2024.

The winner will be presented with a trophy and a £1000 prize. The four other highly commended apprentices will receive a £250 prize as recognition of their achievements.

Applicants, who are currently working for a company which is a member of ALFED and who is either undertaking an apprenticeship or have completed their programme in the year 2023 or 2024, should:

Sherwood Stainless & Aluminium

All of this wouldn’t be possible without the help of Michael Horan, CEO, Sherwood Stainless & Aluminium, who was previously responsible for launching a similar award scheme in the steel industry.

“Our industry is facing a skills gap shortage, and it is essential that we take proactive steps to attract, upskill, and retain the best young talent,” explains Michael.

“The Apprentice of the Year Awards will not only celebrate the achievements of our apprentices but also inspire and motivate the next generation of leaders in our industry.”
